Autobiography of Jamie Lee Fisher
I am 27 years old. I was borne in what was then the small town of
Solon, Ohio. Solon is about 25 miles southeast of Cleveland. I have
an identical twin sister. Her name is Jackie. I grew up very much
in her shadow. Being a twin and growing up in a small town had a great
influence in my life.
In school I was active in all sports. I especially enjoyed gymnastics
and golf. Upon graduation from high school I went to Elon College
in North Carolina. I told everyone that I went to Elon because I received
a partial golf scholarship. There was another reason. I went to Elon
because it gave me a chance to escape the winter weather in Cleveland.
There was no way I was going to any school in the north! Only later
did I realize that Elon College is a great school. If anyone is looking
for a great college (Elon is now a University) I cannot too highly
recommend Elon.
Upon graduating from Elon, I had no idea what I wanted to do with
my life. I accepted a job working in Cleveland as the assistant to
a stockbroker in a large firm. It was a great job and I was working
with many interesting people. I did not like it at all. It just wasn’t
what I wanted. I also was not happy with my life. It seemed like something
was missing.
I stumbled upon a program called Outward Bound. Outward Bound is a
course that you can help develop your self-image and help determine
who you are. My course took place in Colorado. More particularly it
involved a two-week rafting trip down the Colorado River. There were
no amenities! It is just you and Mother Nature! This course taught
me to trust myself and taught me that there was no challenge that
I could not handle. After two weeks of living outside, white water
rafting, rock climbing, hiking up mountains and many other challenging
activities I was a different person. Did the Outward Bound course
change me? Absolutely- in a word I learned self-esteem. I would no
longer be walking in anyone’s shadow.
I was still not happy. Part of the reason was that I had gained some
weight. I tried all kinds of crazy diets. If I lost some weight I
would gain it back, and then some, and then some, after I went off
the diet. One day I got some pictures back that had been taken of
me at a party. I could not believe who was looking at me from those
pictures. It could not be me! I was a little beefy- with the arms
of a wrestler! Enough was enough.
No more excuses or crazy diets. I had to take responsibility for myself.
There were no short cuts. It was now or never. There were other motivations.
I had been in a bad personal relationship. Things at my job were not
going well either. I though this was the result of the unfair way
people were treating me. I know now this was wrong, but back then
I was feeling a little sorry for poor me.
After a good long talk with myself I decided it was time for a new
Jamie! My Outward Bound experience taught me that there was nothing
I couldn’t accomplish if I put my mind to it. So, off I went
to take responsibility for myself and create a new person.
I began a physical fitness program that included weight training,
cardiovascular exercise and, hardest of all, a new way of eating.
There were no shortcuts. No excuses. I took responsibility and worked
my rear off (literally!).
Not only did I get results, I got something else. I found something
that I really enjoyed doing. All of a sudden I couldn’t wait
to get up in the morning! I had a purpose and a mission.
When I learned about MPC Figure Competition I knew I had to compete.
My first show was the 2003 Natural Northern Ohio. I cannot begin to
explain to you how scared I was. My mind told me to drop out-but somehow
I got the nerve to walk out on stage. I don’t remember much
about my posing except that I was shaking like a leaf. I thought I
had embarrassed myself. To my disbelief my training paid off. I won
second place in my class!!
Since then I have been awarded second place in the 2003 Monster Mash,
third place in the 2004 Upper Ohio Valley, “Most Symmetrical”
and first place overall at the 2004 Body Rock competition and fourth
place at the 2004 Team Universe.
My new goal is to earn my IFBB Pro Figure card. I recently moved to
Columbus, Ohio, so I can spend more training time with my coach Mike
Davies.
My experience in figure competitions has taught me discipline, motivation
and self-reliance. Only time will tell whether if I can achieve my
new goal. But, if I don’t succeed it will not be from lack of
effort. I am chasing my dream!
Here is the most important thing I have learned. Find what you love
doing and then do it. Do it with gusto. If I can help any of you with
your interest in weight training or physical fitness please contact
me at this web site.
One other thing. If you are at a figure competition and I am competing-
please clap and scream for me like crazy!
